Will Flat Design Ever Die?

KOUNTERATTACK By KOUNTERATTACK September 29, 2015

Flat Design has cornered the market as the dominant web design style for years, and it doesn’t look like it’s going away anytime soon. Its popularity isn’t without reason: The clean, simple visual style often lends itself well to a content-driven, user-friendly responsive platform.

However, not every aspect of Flat Design should be praised. When done poorly or with too aggressive a minimalistic approach, it can strip all the personality from your site and even work against the UX.

“The best approach to flat design, as with any design philosophy, is to focus less on the aesthetic and more on why you’re designing.”

Beyond all that, who wants to look just like everyone else? While Flat Design can be lauded for its understanding of various principles and patterns, it’s great to be able to break free from the status quo and lead the pack in a new direction.

So what’s the trick to doing it well? Here are some thoughts on the current state of Flat Design and where it’s headed:

“Flat design is like the rebellious teenager who started realizing not everything was worth fighting against. In 2013, it raged against anything skeuomorphic, but as it mellows out, we see the return of texture and gradient for creating familiarity with users.

When you consider the spirit behind flat design (visual simplicity) and skeuomorphism (visual familiarity), you find that both concepts can certainly co-exist. The tricky part, as current years and the future will certainly prove, is finding the perfect balance between the two.”
